Polychromy laboratory

This laboratory studies the painting techniques of polychromies on diverse supports. Only non-invasive (without sampling), non-destructive (without destroying the sample) and micro-desctructive (with micro-sampling) analysis methods are used.

The study of the painting techniques is based on:

- the identification of the components of the paint layers (pigments, colorants, binders, varnishes, additives...);
- the identification of the function of each layer in the layer structure (preparation, isolation, underlayer, glaze...);
- the analysis of the interactions and transformations of the materials after aging (phenomena of decoloration, whitening, blackening, forming of soaps, salts, crusts...); 
- the study of the methods of fabrication of pigments (raw material, differences in quality, forgery / fraud)

The research of this laboratory focuses on:
- the study of organic colourants (identification methods, studies of the properties, behaviour, degradations, method of fabrication, frequency of use in the glazes);
- the study of the techniques and technologies of polychromies and the reconstruction of preparation and application techniques (applied brocades, glazes, aventurine, gilding...);
- the development of micro-destructive methods for organic colourants by reducing the quantity needed for their identification;
- the development and improvement of non-destructive spectroscopic imaging methods.
