Heritage and innovation: techniques implemented by KIK-IRPA

On the occasion of the 34th Heritage Days, the theme of which is "Heritage & Innovation", the Royal Commission has decided to welcome several collaborators of the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (IRPA) on Thursday 8 September at 3 pm.

Since 1948, the Institute has been using an interdisciplinary approach and cutting-edge technologies to study, preserve and restore heritage. In order to give an account of the richness of the subjects dealt with by KIK-IRPA and the diversity of the techniques used, several members of the Institute will give a lecture on the following subjects:

Julie Désarnaud, from the Monuments and Monumental Decoration Lab, will talk about salts and humidity: the bad duo for the preservation of built heritage.
Camille De Clercq, head of the conservation and restoration department, will ask the question of how to desalinate a sculpted limestone work while preserving its precious original polychrome remains.
Pascale Fraiture, head of the dendrochronology laboratory and head of the works department, and Christophe Maggi, head of the works department, will present the "decoding" of wood sculptures: dendrochronology.

After the conference, demonstrations of two techniques will be given:
Infrared reflectography of a painting, by Sophie De Potter ;
Dendrochronology in practice and its applications to buildings and the subsoil, by Pascale Fraiture and Christophe Maggi.

Practical information: Thursday 8/9 2022 from 3 pm to 5.30 pm at the Vertbois in Liège, seat of the secretariat of the Regional Chamber.

Participation in the conferences is free and open to all. However, prior registration is required. To register for this conference, please follow the instructions at the bottom of this page.
